The State of Texas begins to reopen this week with state parks to reopen today, April 20th (with social distancing restrictions), non emergency medical procedures to resume on April 22 and retail locations to operate “retail-to-go” starting Friday. There are new laws in place to give workers “added protection” now that we live in a “new normal”. These new laws address sick leave, masks and protection for those who speak out against unsafe conditions.

Sick Leave- The newly passed Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act has a very important rule for families: as long as an employee’s business is still open, they can get up to 12 weeks of paid leave if a child’s school or daycare is closed — and all schools are closed in Texas.
Masks- Employers can’t force a worker to take off a mask if government officials recommend them, but they’re not required to provide them.
Speaking out- There are protections for those who speak out about unsafe conditions.
