According to the AP, a tour group visiting the memorial in Money, Mississippi, found someone had removed panels which contained photos and information detailing Till’s life, which was snuffed short by a group of White vigilantes. Just weeks prior, the marker was defaced after someone scratched it with a blunt tool.

The memorial, erected in 2011, stands as a marker along the Mississippi Freedom Trail. According to the AP, the memorial cost  more than $8,000, and repairs will amount to at least $500.

Though try as they may, Till’s name will never be erased from the ills of Jim Crow. The 14-year-old teen was murdered in Mississippi during a visit in the summer of 1955. A local White woman named Carolyn Bryant claimed that Till whistled at her, in which lawless town members kidnapped, tortured and later murdered the young teen. His tormenters were never bought to justice.

After his disfigured body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River, his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, transported his remains back to Chicago and held an open casket funeral for the world to see.

In 2016, Bryant confessed that she fabricated the whole story which led to Till’s death.

In October, a separate memorial erected near where Till’s remains were discovered was found ridden with bullet holes.
