A cite and release program for individuals caught with small amounts of marijuana has been approved by The Dallas City Council. Under the program, if you are stopped for possession of four ounces of marijuana of less, you can be cited instead of going to jail. Dallas City Councilwoman Jennifer Gates argued, “Here might be a misconception in the public that if we have cite and release, it’s okay and it’s not going to be on their criminal record but it is still going to be on someone’s criminal record,” argued Dallas City Councilwoman Jennifer Gates.

She went on to say that there were too many variables in the program and wanted it reexamined. Dallas police told the council that in 2016, 432 people were arrested for marijuana possession that could have been eligible for this cite and release program and saved them about an hour for each call. The program will go into effect October 1, 2017.
